Keeping it in the Dark

"This looks like real science!"

This week just flew by and we have moved from sunny and 80F to rainy/cloudy and 60s. Hilary has come and gone. Leaves are falling. But some things remain the same, like Team Midge forging ahead. One person who is doing just that (not that the rest of us are not, but perhaps in less tangible/photogenic ways) is Maddy.

Soil extractions.

Maddy has been working very hard processing some soils that we collected from the HEL experiment this summer. Many of the samples that she collected have already been processed, but some remain. Right now she is working on extracting phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) from the soil. Following the extraction and some analysis in sensitive machines she will be able to tell how many and what kind of microbes are present in the soil. We hope to see big differences as we have in almost everything else that has been measured in the midge addition plots.

The Limnos on Lake Mendota.

In other news David and I are waiting for two of our papers to make it to print, he is preparing to submit another, and we are working on one together at the moment. Gotta feed the beast (aka Claudio!)!

Bless,

Jamin
